From the age of two, it was apparent that Samantha (she likes to be called ‘Sammy’) was quite an athlete, and destined to push the limits of whatever activity interested her. She was riding ponies (she even had her own pony named “Lady Bug”) in such prestigious equestrian events as the “Hampton Classic” Horse Show in Bridgehampton, New York, an annual competition for the best competitors in the nation.
After several years riding ponies, at three years old Sammy saw a “GAP” television commercial featuring karate and coincidentally featuring James Solis, who years later became her teammate on Team Prorank’s National Karate Team. Fascinated by the commercial, Sammy asked her mother when she would be old enough to learn karate. Her mother promised to look into it, figuring that it would be a fun activity—not realizing that the fun activity would turn into an obsession to master the sport, and to take it to the next level.
Now twenty years old, Sammy has been training in the martial arts for over sixteen years. Her instructor from age 4 though 16 was Shihan John Busto, a 7th Degree Black Belt at Busto’s Karate in Plainview, New York, where Kenpo karate is the style taught, and presently is Eric san Jose of Epic Martial Arts in Hicksville, where Tae Kwondo is taught.
Sammy is a third degree “Black Belt” in Tae Kwon Do as well as a “Black Belt” in Kenpo Karate. She trains six days a week, about two to three hours a day . She has taught classes to students both younger and older than her. She can often be seen helping fellow students learn the bo staff, nunchakus and kamas. She knows more than 60 Kenpo and Tae Kwondo katas (a series of forms). She is also a certified Hyper Martial Arts Instructor and teaches a weekly competition team classes at Epic Martial Arts. She is also a full time student at Hofstra University on Long Island, New York, majoring in exercise science.
In June of 2004 Sammy experienced the excitement of NASKA (North American Sport Karate Association) competition and she hasn’t looked back. At the time she was a “blue” belt and gained valuable experience at the U.S. Open in Orlando Florida.
In the fall of 2004 Sammy met world champions Daniel Sterling and Matt Emig and started training with the determination that made them champions and has now made her a household name among the NASKA karate circuit. While Daniel taught Sammy the keys to strong sport karate forms, Matt taught her Nunchucks techniques which have made her the premier female Nunchucks competitor and teacher in the United States. In 2009 Sammy also started serious training of the Bo Staff with world champion Lauren Kearney and this quickly translated into several Grand Championships. She is proficient in Nunchucks, Bo staff and Kamas. Of course nun chucks are the hardest to master since they are a “two-section” weapon, requiring constant manipulation to to be used properly.
Since 2005 Sammy has finished first in over 495 divisions throughout the NASKA circuit, in Rhode Island, Virginia, Texas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Florida, Washington D.C., New York, Georgia, Quebec, California, Philadelphia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Minnesota and Illinois. In 2008, Sammy won two individual Gold Medals and an additional ‘team’ Gold Medal at the Martial Arts Olympics in St. Petersburg, Russia. Then in 2009 Sammy won five Gold Medals at the WKA World Championships in Huelva, Spain.
Sammy was the first under belt (non black belt) to perform on stage at a night time show when she was invited by Charlie Lee at the World Series of Martial Arts in 2005 to give a guest performance at 7 years old as a ‘green belt.’ He predicted great things for Sammy and proved prolific. She continued with night show performances as an under belt at the Battle of Atlanta and the Bluegrass Nationals in 2005, as well as at the Disney Martial Arts Festival in Orlando Florida in November 2006, 2007 and 2008, the New England Open in 2007 and the Martial Arts Olympics in 2008.
Sammy was also the winner of the underbelt weapons Grand Championship at the “Battle of Atlanta”, the Underbelt extreme weapons Grand Championship at “The AKA Grand Nationals” and the Black Belt Grand Champion at the Tiger Claw Elite Championships in Orlando, Florida in 2006, 2007 & 2008.
In 2006 Sammy began competing as a ‘Black Belt’ and she has dominated the Traditional and Extreme Forms and Weapons divisions. Sammy is considered the number one Nunchucks competitor in the United States and teaches private lessons to students who wish to continue in her footsteps. As a Black Belt, she has won no less than 125 Girls Grand Championships throughout the NASKA circuit. She was also the overall Grand Champion more than 35 times, often competing against much older and more experienced boys and girls. She is now a thirty three (33) time NASKA “World Champion”and a five (5) time WKA “World Champion.”
In 2011 Sammy set a NASKA world record by winning 28 “Grand Championships” in 14 World Rated NASKA tournaments, which included “Double Grands” in 12 tournaments and the near impossible feat of “Triple Grands” in one tournament.
In 2013 Sammy added her second Black Belt, in Tae Kwon Do, having studied for several years with Master Eric San Jose and has been teaching competition forms at Epic Martial Arts in Hicksville New York. She also frequently conducts seminars for Hyper Martial Arts as well as her own style of competition forms.
Taylor Lautner (also known as ‘Shark Boy’ [from the Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl] and ‘Jacob Black’ in the ‘Twilight” series [Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse & Breaking Dawn]) is a favorite of Sammy’s (and a friend) and she hopes to follow in his footsteps in the future, as she has endeavored into integrating martial arts into acting. She has already filmed four television commercials, a short film, a television pilot and has been photographed for full page spreads in popular magazines such as J-14 (See September 2011) and Shaolin Kung Fu-Tai Chi Magazine (inside back cover: Jan. – Feb. 2007). in 2012 she was featured in Nickelodeons “Figure it Out” TV show. She has been featured in Newspaper articles and television news stories. She also has four of her own martial arts instructional videos. Her first were “Sammy Smith’s Spectacular Nunchucks” and “Sammy Smith’s Fearsome Forms.” In 2012 Sammy became a certified “Hyper” Martial Arts instructor and Hyper “Pro” and in February of 2013 released her first two “HYPER” instructional DVD’s.
In 2015 Sammy was asked to join the most prestigious martial arts competition team in the country, Team Paul Mitchell, fulfilling a lifelong dream and following in the footsteps of her past and present instructors, Daniel Sterling, Matt Emig, Lauren Kearney and Caitlin Dechelle. It was quite an honor and a reward for Sammy’s hard work, determination and incredible accomplishments.
In 2016 Sammy won her first adult ISKA World Title, winning the Women’s 18+ Overall Forms World Championship at the prestigious US Open in Orlando Florida, a competition that is broadcast throughout the world on ESPN2. She followed that up in 2017, winning the ISKA Women’s 18+ Overall Weapons World Championship, which can also be seen on ESPN2.
Sammy hopes to continue growing as a proficient martial artist and a “cool” young lady.
